3.10.07 - Rock n Roll Hall of FameThe morning after King Wilkie played the Beachland Ballroom in Cleveland, Nick and Jake wandered down the street from the hotel to the Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame. While the rest of the band dined at a rustico-type business lunch place, we got to thinking about the topic of which artists from today will in 20 years be considered groundbreaking or relevant enough to be inducted into the hall of fame.
The requirements seem straighforward enough; some combination of talent, a certain level of commercial success, critical acclaim and career ambition. But aside from some undeniables from the past 10 years (Nirvana, Radiohead) guesing becomes pretty tricky. Who in the past 5 years could be a hall of fame contender? Artists can be nominated 25 years after their first release.
Some possibbilities?: Dinasaur Jr. Flaming Lips. Guided By Voices. Yo La Tango. Pixies. Pavement. Beck. Bjork. Modest Mouse. Oasis. Franz Ferdinand. More recently?: Broken Social Scene. Gorillaz. Arcade Fire. Arctic Monkeys. Gnarls Barkley. Magic Numbers.
You'd like to imagine that there's an important band that won't be recognized until after they are gone (as were the Velvet Underground.) Or maybe the next generation of Hall of Fame candidates will be more in the auteur/producer category, like a Danger Mouse type? Future Rock Hall is an interesting site where you can vote for the next 25 years of future hall of famers, as recent as artists who released their first recording in 2006, which makes them eligible in the year 2031.
